Roadtrips in an A8? No problem.

Kinja'd!!!

From calculations from the MPG and range, this has a 82.5 Litre tank. Massive indeed.

Put me down for one. . . Used in 2020. Almost 900 miles is awesome. Nearly triple what I can do now.

Range is idiotic... What counts in consumption, not range...

I'm sure I can get that same range with my Corvette... I would just need a 32 gallon tank...

The article reports that it gets about 40 MPG.

This is a very weird article. He spends how many words to rail against the concept of battery electrics behind the guise of a review about the A8.

His deciding points are AWD, without saying why it's a benefit in a luxo-barge, weight difference (it's 2% lighter than a beemer!) and fuel costs, because, as he already pointed out, it's only $1200 a year and people who buy $100,000 limos don't care about fuel costs (his words).

The range is a surprising number, but it doesn't mean much unless you're looking at hydrocarbon versus battery. Any hydrocarbon to hydrocarbon comparison means nothing, because that's what gas stations are for. With an 868 mile range, at 75 mph, that's more than 11 hours. No way my wife's bladder lasts that long anyways.

Well, so do most diesel cars in Europe, whatever the car... nothing particular in this really... It's just promoted as if it was something "new" or innovative... well, it's just a bigger tank...

40 mpg is impressive for a car that big.

That's what pretty much all BMW 5 series diesel get too... I mean were getting, back in the early 2000s... Road-tripped in a 1999 530d a couple years ago, my gas consumption was 6L/100km which equals to a bit over 39mpg travelling at 120 to 130kmh... Also did a 180kmh AVERAGE in germany between Munich and Köln and did 8.5L/100km of average consumption in an 2012 Alfa Giulietta diesel... So this is really nothing exeptional... Big engine, low RPM... pretty much the same reason why my '95 corvette does 30mpg on the freeway with its 5.7L engine...

Weight and power are big factor with the A8. Sure the Corvette gets great MPG's, but what does it weigh and what is it's gear ratio? How fast would a modern A8 be compared to a 99 530D?

On the vette, gear ratio is normal up to 5th and 6th is kind of an overdrive. Gearing is 3.07 rear I think, not sure... It also weights close to 1.5 tons which NOT light... I'm guessing an A8 is close to 2 tons though... Nonetheless, big engine (especially diesel) + huge low end torque + good highway gearing = low gas consumption... Not new... the 2012 BMW 550d with 400hp and (hold on) 546lb/ft of torque does easily 6L/100km (40mpg roughly). It just has a smaller tank and does not have this "range"... it's still just as big and as powerful as the A8...

Only "innovation" Audi brought is a bigger gas tank... nothing worth advertising about really lol

It really is, especially since that means less stops for fuel. Diesel pumps are usually nasty.

lol, so yes, it gets the owner a bit less dirty at the pump :)

I just don't consider a bigger gas tank, to make people believe that the car is more efficient, fair... People are tricked into thinking that their car is more economical when it's just not the case....

A bit the same when my wife looks at the gas gauge after I put 50$ of gas in the car... "Half, that's all?? Your car is so expensive!!"... Well, no, it just has a big gas tank... For her, her car which is actually just as thirsty as my Corvette on the freeway is more economical, because with 50$ she has a full tank of gas... It does not matter that she has to stop twice more than I do lol

As someone with a gas guzzler with a tiny tank, a bigger tank is a huge luxury that I totally can get behind. Sure it only takes $60 to fill it up, but when it's gone in +/-200 miles it gets old filling it up once or twice a week.
